Discover our nurse leadership programme designed specifically for internationally educated registered nurses. Build leadership skills, enhance your confidence, and advance your career in social care.

Internationally educated registered nurses play a vital role in the adult social care workforce and so we’ve developed this programme to ensure that they have the knowledge and skills to be a confident and effective leader whilst working in social care in England.

It’s important that internationally recruited registered nurses feel valued and supported and so we’ll provide them with the tools and techniques needed to better lead themselves and others, to understand their boundaries and to understand the role of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). We’ll also explore what social care is and how social care and health work together. It’s a fantastic opportunity to meet other internationally educated nurses and form a support network.

To be eligible for the programme, participants must have:

  1. their NMC PIN and
  2. have been in the UK for less than two years.

Aims of the programme and learning outcomes

  • to further develop leadership skills
  • to identify and address strengths and what areas for leadership development.
  • to be more confident in professional decision making and maintaining boundaries
  • to enhance critical reflection skills
  • to have a greater understanding of the role of a registered nurse working in the health and care system in England
  • to develop a professional network including other internationally educated registered nurses
  • to have a greater understanding of the values and ethics that guide professional nursing practice.

Delivery

The programme will be delivered over a three month period, in which there will be three online live workshops, four virtual reflection sessions and self-learning exercises. Attendance at the workshops and reflection sessions is mandatory.

Workshop topics

Managing myself as a leader

Explore leadership styles and how an individual’s leadership skills can be improved. We’ll also focus on ethics and values and how they relate to nursing practice.

Understanding my role as a nurse

Learn about the NMC code and maintaining your registration through revalidation. We’ll highlight the purpose and principles of adult social care in England and what the role of a registered nurse is. There will also be an overview of the health and social care systems and a much more detailed look at social care and how it relates to the role of a registered nurse.

Managing boundaries and developing my professional network

Explore theories of leadership and the concept of resilience. Time will also be spent considering how to manage change and also how to influence people effectively. We’ll also discuss how important networking is and how this can be a great source of support and new opportunities.

Reflection sessions

These sessions support learning and development, offering a safe space to share what’s been learnt, discuss challenges, and celebrate successes.

This is an opportunity to build meaningful connections, exchange valuable insights, and learn from colleagues and feel supported throughout the leadership journey.
